About
Whitehouse offers an undergraduate Bachelor of Design with three specialisations being Fashion Design, Interior Design and Creative Direction & Styling. Students undertake a trimester model of study, achieving a Bachelor of Design in just two years full time or up to four years part time. This allows students to launch their career in the design industry one year earlier than most university graduates. Students can further their qualification by undertaking a post graduate Master of Design in 12 months. We proudly deliver an exceptional 1,728 hours of face-to-face teaching over two years.
Fashion Design is for students who want to pursue careers as innovative designers. It sets out to deliver a clear understanding of and experience in generating, developing and realising a variety of creative womenswear, menswear and accessory ideas to a professional standard. The diversity of the fashion industry is converted through a varied curriculum, targeted projects and the guidance of established and visiting lecturers who are specialists in this sector.
Fashion Design Students will develop skill sets from the following areas:
- design and critical thinking
- illustration; fashion illustration styles and technical specification drawing
- digital; Adobe Creative Cloud programs such as Illustrator, InDesign, StyleCAD, web and film related programs
- flat pattern cutting, modelling on the stand, garment construction, tailoring processes and finishing.
Interior Design students focus on a diverse range of interior design areas including residential interior design, furniture and installation design, retail interior design, community landscape design and commercial office interior design. Whitehouse offers an intense immersion in materials research and exploration in the process of making new or transforming existing buildings, furniture and objects. Interior Design looks not only at the application of surface materials but more fully at understanding the design of usable spaces that enhance lifestyle.
Interior Design Students will develop skill sets from the following areas:
- design and critical thinking
- illustration; sketching to fully rendered perspectives
- CAD; guided ArchiCAD training
- digital; Adobe Creative Cloud programs such as Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, web and film related programs
- technical documentation; Interior design documentation, construction and regulation
- professional practice skills.
Creative Direction & Styling is for students who want to pursue a career as a highly skilled stylist with the ability to create new narratives covering both creative and operational strategies in the contemporary fashion, food, interiors and event styling industries. This specialisation is underpinned by core graphic design principles and skills for the styling of people and spaces. You will learn photography and how to present ideas for magazine and publishing within print and digital formats.
Creative Direction Students will develop skill sets from the following areas:
- design and critical thinking
- illustration; Multidisciplinary illustration styles
- digital; Adobe Creative Cloud programs such as Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Lightroom, Premiere Pro and After Effects
- image Creative; Fashion, food, interiors, event concepts, personal styling, visual merchandising and product design, sourcing and creative direction
- professional practice skills.

Policies and Services
Admission criteria
All applicants to supply with application:
- latest academic transcripts/records (complete or incomplete)
- creative portfolio (minimum 6-8 pieces in any medium)
- motivational statement (300 words)
- an ATAR of 67.95* is desirable if applying with a secondary education only but is not the only criteria for acceptance.
Applicants with higher education study
Applicants may have completed or undertaken studies in the following from an Australian, International University or other Australian Registered Training Organisation (RTO):
- an undergraduate degree or
- an associate degree.
Recognition of prior learning
Academic Credits (RPL) can be awarded to accredited subject(s) previously undertaken at another education provider and/or relevant industry experience. Advanced Standing may also be awarded to applicants who have completed courses in a similar field of study. Depending on the level of study completed, applicants may be eligible to receive direct articulation into study period two, three or four of the Bachelor of Design.
Applicants with vocational education and training (VET) study
Applicants may have completed or undertaken studies in the following Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) programs at Whitehouse, TAFE or another RTO:
- Certificate III in Design Fundamentals or
- Certificate IV or
- Diploma or
- Advanced Diploma.
Applicants with work and life experience
Finished secondary education more than two years ago
Applicants who have not undertaken studies post high school are to have undertaken significant professional/commercial practice for 2 years or more within the creative industries. Additional to admission criteria will be a CV showing academic, professional and work experience.
An adjustment factor to the application will be taken into consideration if:
- evidence is produced indicating exceptional creative endeavours. Whitehouse will also consider: volunteering, internship, work experience, past/current employment and or extracurricular activities
- applicant is of mature age (aged 21 years or older at time of application).
Bridging and enabling course entry
Applicants after adjustment, VET, work and life experience applicants may be required to complete a literacy assessment. This will take the form of a 1000 word written research task on a topic defined by the Academic Director. This is to support demonstrated academic research, analysis and writing skills in combination with the portfolio and CV.
Applicants with a recent secondary education
Australian Year 12 students
Applicants who have completed in the past two years or are due to complete in the year of application one of the following at High School in Australia, TAFE or internationally:
- Higher School Certificate (HSC) or TAFE Statement in HSC Studies or
- Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL)
- Certificate of Education within Australian States & Territories or
- International Baccalaureate (IB) or
- Equivalent International Senior School Certificate
- Higher School Certificate (HSC) or TAFE Statement in HSC Studies or
- Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL)
- Certificate of Education within Australian States & Territories or

- Advanced International Certificate of Education
- European Baccalaureate

- ATAR 67.85 is desirable if applicable and high school studies undertaken in Australia.
Selection rank adjustments
An ATAR of 67.95* is desirable if applying with a secondary education only but is not the only criteria for acceptance. An adjustment factor to the application will be taken into consideration if:
- applicant has completed a Certificate III in Design Fundamentals (or equivalent) at Whitehouse or at another RTO
- evidence is produced indicating exceptional creative endeavours. Whitehouse will also consider: volunteering, internship, work experience, past/current employment and or extracurricular activities.
Equity adjustments
Applicants may also be considered for admission on the basis of identifying with an equity group or experiencing disadvantage. Whitehouse may then increase your selection rank if there is evidence of the applicant requiring an ‘equity adjustment’:
Applicant identifies as one of the following equity groups:
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
- people from lower socio-economic backgrounds
- people with disability
- people from remote, rural or isolated areas
- people who are the first in their family to attend a university or other higher educational institution
- people from non-English speaking backgrounds.
There are specific categories of disadvantage that Whitehouse will also consider, which are detailed below. Educational performance and/or personal situation prior to enrolment must have been seriously affected, normally for a period of at least six months, due to circumstances beyond the applicants control or choosing.
- Disrupted Schooling
- Severe Family Disruption
- Excessive family responsibilities
- Personal Illness/disability
- Refugee Status.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

Domestic applications with international qualifications
All academic records and qualifications issued International are to be in English or translated to English and certified.
English language requirements
Depending on your educational background and country of origin, you may need to provide evidence of your English proficiency to be able to study at Whitehouse. It’s important to understand English well enough that you can comfortably cope with lectures, tutorials, studio classes and assignments. If English is not your first language, you will need to have either:
- successfully completed previous studies in which the language of instruction, examination and assessment was in English for a minimum of 2 years, or
- completed an English proficiency test - minimum English standard Academic IELTS of 6.5 (with no band lower than 6.0) or TOEFL 79-93 if requested.
How to apply
The application process:
- Read the online application information as well as the Bachelor of Design course information.
- Read the policies related to your application and subsequent enrolment.
- Complete and submit the Application for Enrolment Ensure that you attach your most recent academic results and CV (if applicable).
- Prepare your Creative Portfolio and Motivational Statement (these can be attached to your application or presented during your interview).
- Attend an interview, between now and before the commencement of classes, with your Portfolio and Statement.
- Whitehouse Institute will advise you of the status of your application within 48 hours of your interview.
As a successful applicant you will receive an Offer of Enrolment inviting you to enrol in the Bachelor of Design. With the Offer of Enrolment, you will be provided with an Enrolment Form as well as supporting information, such as the Enrolment Guide that covers subject fee schedule, payment information, links to Whitehouse Policies and Student manual as well as the art and technical equipment requirements. This will assist you to make an informed decision and be aware of the terms and conditions of your enrolment in the Bachelor of Design.
If you do not initially meet all entry requirements, you may have the opportunity to provide additional information to allow your application to be reconsidered. Whitehouse Institute will advise what you need to provide if this applies.
Enrolment
Acceptance of offer
Complete all sections of the Enrolment Form and then sign the Student Declaration on the final page. If you are under the age of 18 at the time of enrolment (domestic students only), the Duty of Care and the Enrolment Declaration must be co-signed by your parent or guardian.
Submit the Enrolment Form and any additional documentation if requested to Admissions. No upfront fees are required at submission of enrolment documentation. When the Enrolment Form and all relevant documentation has been received by Whitehouse, a Confirmation of Enrolment is issued. An invoice will be issued if you have opted to pay the fees up front.
International students will be issued with pre-Confirmation of Enrolment and an invoice for the fees. Once fees have been paid, Whitehouse will confirm your enrolment and issue a CoE to support your student visa application.
The Confirmation of Enrolment will have your student number, course start and end dates, Centrelink Provider number along with the Orientation, Academic and Census dates along with Tuition Fee schedule of your enrolment.
Advanced standing
Applicants can discuss their previous studies or workplace experience with admissions and make separate application for Academic Credit (RPL) or Advanced Standing.
To apply for Academic Credit: Complete the Application for Academic Credit and submit completed form with supporting documentation and evidence to Whitehouse Institute.
Advanced Standing may be awarded to students who have completed courses in a similar field of study. Depending on the level of study completed, you may be eligible to receive direct articulation into study period two, three or four of the Bachelor of Design. Download or request the Application for Direct Entry - submit with your current/previous qualification and transcript of academic results. If advanced standing is awarded the length of your study may be reduced.
Deferment
On the receipt of your Offer of Enrolment, you are to enrol to secure your place in your preferred intake. This should be done as soon as practicable but must be before the published date of commencement of the Bachelor of Design. However, you can elect to defer accepting the offer to the next intake but no later than one year without the need to reapply or you can withdraw your interest in the course.
If you have submitted your enrolment documentation and your enrolment has been confirmed, you will need to follow the Whitehouse formal deferral or withdrawal process as soon as possible but not later than the census date to avoid incurring fees. This will be outlined on the enrolment form but can also be found in the Student Handbook as well as Whitehouse Policies and Procedures. You are to contact Admissions to discuss your options.
Fees and charges
The following subject delivery and fee schedule is for one study period only. The course consists of six study periods totalling 30 subjects (288 credit points) being 18 core subjects and 12 subjects specific to a student’s elective specialisation. Financial assistance
Youth and student allowances
The Whitehouse is an approved provider with Australian Government Department of Human Services (known as Centrelink). Domestic students may be eligible for financial assistance such as Youth Allowance, Austudy and Abstudy. Students may also be eligible for an Education Entry payment or Student Start-up loan. Students are required to enquire directly to Centrelink to determine if they are eligible for government financial support.
Loans
Whitehouse Institute of Design, Australia has been approved by the Commonwealth Government to offer HELP (previously known as FEE-HELP). HELP is a loan scheme that assists eligible fee-paying students to pay all or part of their tuition fees. The Commonwealth Government pays the scheduled fees directly to Whitehouse Institute. Eligible students can borrow up to the HELP limit to pay their tuition fees. HELP does not cover any additional expenses such as course materials, art & technical equipment, incidental fees, accommodation or living expenses. HELP at Whitehouse is available to Australian Citizens, Permanent Humanitarian Visa holders or New Zealand Citizens that qualify for a New Zealand Special Category Visa. You will require a valid Tax File Number (TFN) to apply for HELP assistance.
Scholarships
In partnership with the Wool4School Design Competition, current Year 12 students can win a Scholarship to Whitehouse Institute of Design in either Sydney or Melbourne.
Exchange
Whitehouse has international partnerships to offer unique exchange opportunities for students during their studies. Whitehouse students have the opportunity to study and intern on exchange in Japan at Bunka Gakuen University with Yuima Nakazato. Also, students have an opportunity to study for a study period in the UK with University for the Creative Arts.
