About

Victoria University (VU) has been transforming lives through education for over 100 years.

VU is renowned for empowering our diverse community of domestic and international students to grow their capabilities and achieve success.

From 2018, the first year of all Bachelor degrees at our Melbourne campuses are delivered in a more focused way, one unit at a time, through our new First year Model. Founded on the success of universities in the US, Canada and Sweden that have been teaching this way for decades, our First Year Model offers small class sizes, more one-on-one time with teaching staff and an innovative block learning approach.

We have modernised our entry requirements, so access to many of our courses is now determined by meeting a wider range of admission criteria, with applications assessed more fairly. Together with our TAFE division Victoria University Polytechnic, we are one of the few universities in Australia to both offer vocational education training (VE/TAFE) and higher education courses. This enables our students to transition between courses to reach their desired career outcome.

VU has strong industry connections with key industry partners including the Western Bulldogs Football Club, Western Health, City West Water, Melbourne Victory Football club, Australian Institute of Sport, the World Health Organisation and the Real Madrid Graduate School Universidad Europea. It is this focus combined with meaningful work placements, flexible pathways and course delivery, that our students achieve success on their own terms. VU graduates have been recipients of many state, national and prestigious European awards, and make valuable contributions to local and international communities.

VU is one of Australia’s largest and most culturally diverse education institutions, with eight campuses across the CBD and Melbourne’s west, as well as one in Sydney. We also have an international reputation for research excellence through our research institutes and centres.

VU is ranked in the top 2% of universities worldwide in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2017 and ranked 56 in the world’s top universities aged under 50 in the Times Higher Education Young University Rankings 2017. We are also in the top 25 universities globally for sport education (Shanghai Ranking’s Global Ranking of Sport Science Schools 2017).

To ensure education is accessible to all, VU provides comprehensive academic, career and financial support to its students. Each year, VU awards hundreds of scholarships to students at all levels including Achievement Scholarships offered to every secondary school in Melbourne’s western region and the Chancellor’s Scholars Program for commencing students achieving an ATAR of at least 90. Access Scholarships are also available for students with financial support needs.

By studying with VU in 2020, you can become part of over 100 years of tradition, and discover your true success.

Special consideration

Institutional access and equity queries should be directed to:

Contact phone number: (03) 9919 6100
Institutional web page: read about the special admission programs or search our FAQ page on the Victoria University website.

Access & equity through VTAC (SEAS):

Victoria University acknowledges that applicants come from a diverse range of backgrounds and life circumstances, including socio-economic, educational, cultural and linguistic, and that these factors affect an applicant's preparation for post-secondary study.

Through lodging a Special Entry Access Scheme (SEAS) application, eligible applicants are provided with the opportunity to apply for additional consideration under one or more of the SEAS categories recognised by the University.

In addition to completing a SEAS application, applicants must also complete and submit a VTAC course application, satisfy all requirements that are published in the relevant course entry and provide appropriate supporting documentation.

Principles of Selection

VU is committed to providing a transparent admissions process. Find out more about the university admission requirements for all applicants and our commitment to admissions transparency.

Applicants must meet the minimum entry requirements to be eligible for admission to VU courses. Course-specific requirements can be found in both VU's course search and the VTAC CourseSearch.

For more information

Competitive selection process

Should demand exceed the amount of places available for a course, applicants may be ranked on a combination of their performance in prerequisite studies, higher education or VET studies and work/life experience. Applicants who do not satisfy published entry requirements for their chosen course are encouraged to explore other study options at VU that provide a pathway to their chosen course.

High performance sport adjustment

For applicable courses, applicants who participate in high level sport (players, coaches and officials) can apply to receive an adjustment of 5 ATAR points (recent secondary applicants only) or additional consideration towards their selection rank (all other applicants).

Applicants must complete the High Performance Sport Adjustment application and submit it directly to VU together by the closing date indicated on the application.

For more information, read about information for elite student athletes.

Entry pathways

There are many ways you can start your education journey at VU. Pathways offer an easy transition between courses at different levels, so you may start with a certificate and progress right through to postgraduate study. Our pathways are designed to suit all types of students. Whether you've just finished secondary school, want to develop new skills, are looking for career advancement or want to change career direction, we can offer you a solution.

Applicants with a HE study

Entrance requirements

For the majority of courses, applicants must have successfully completed or partially completed an Australian Higher Education award (or equivalent) or successfully completed a single unit of Higher Education studies. Some courses have higher requirements. Check VU's course search or the VTAC CourseSearch for minimum requirements.

Applicants with a VET Study

Entrance requirements

You must have satisfactorily completed an accredited award at Diploma or above at an Australian Registered Training Organisation. Some Victoria University courses may accept a completed Certificate IV in tertiary preparation. Check VU's course search or the VTAC CourseSearch for minimum requirements.

Applicants with Work and Life experience

Entrance requirements

If you do not have any formal academic history, you may be considered on the basis of work or life experiences. Courses that will consider prior experience will include a request to provide this information. Applicants without relevant work/life experience will be assessed on their Year 12 results and will be required to meet the prerequisites outlined under the recent secondary admission criteria and minimum ATAR (for courses that use the ATAR as part of selection).

Applicants with a recent secondary education (Current, 2018 and 2019)

Published prerequisites

For most undergraduate courses, applicants need to satisfy the published prerequisites for the course. Some courses also require applicants to achieve a minimum ATAR in addition to satisfying all other course selection requirements. Applicants applying to an ATAR course with an ATAR below the minimum may still be selected if they qualify for subject/SEAS adjustments. The maximum adjustment an applicant can receive for a course is 20 adjustment points.

VU Guaranteed

Our exclusive VU Guaranteed program offers Year 11 and 12 students from partnership schools a guaranteed place at Victoria University (VU) or Victoria University Polytechnic (VU Polytechnic), prior to their final Year 12 exams.

To apply for VU Guaranteed you need to:

  • Be a current Year 12 student at an eligible school
  • Complete Year 12;
  • Add a VU course to your VTAC preference list; and
  • Meet the course prerequisites.
