Policies and Services

Admission criteria

All applicants

To be eligible for admission to a UniSQ course, you are required to satisfy all entry requirements.

When applying you should consider:

• Entry score (selection rank)
• Assumed knowledge of a subject area/and or subject prerequisites
• English language proficiency
• Additional entry requirements such as auditions, interviews, Diploma study, Nursing registration and Initial Teacher Education statements.

The entry requirements for UniSQ programs are listed on UniSQ’s website.

You are selected based on an ATAR or selection rank for most courses. A selection rank can be assigned to recognised qualifications and admission pathways such as paid work experience and special admissions tests.

UniSQ will generally use the best of the ranks assigned (age restrictions and other requirements may apply for some entry pathways and graduate entry programs) – contact UniSQ for more information.

For programs that do not have listed subject prerequisites we assume you have a minimum level of knowledge before you start your program.

Applicants with higher education study

If you have undertaken previous recognised higher education level study (e.g. AQF Bachelor degree level and higher) this will be assigned a selection rank based on the level, duration and Grade Point Average (GPA) of the study.

If you have several selection ranks calculated (e.g. ranks based on year 12 results, VET study, higher education study, employment), you will generally be considered on the highest rank.

You are also required to meet relevant subject prerequisites for the course you are applying for. This will be satisfied by successful completion of Senior secondary subjects (or equivalent). Any additional entry requirements must also be satisfied.

Applicants with a completed bridging or enabling course

UniSQ recognises a number of other tertiary preparation, bridging and enabling and foundation programs offered by higher education providers across Australia. Contact UniSQ Admissions for more information.

You are also required to meet relevant subject prerequisites for the course you are applying for. This will be satisfied by successful completion of Senior secondary subjects (or equivalent). Any additional entry requirements must also be satisfied.

Applicants with Vocational Education and Training (VET) study

Competency-based and graded AQF certificates III and IV (completed), AQF diplomas and sub-degree level study (based on level, duration, Grade Point Average (GPA) will be assigned a selection rank.

If you have several selection ranks calculated (e.g. ranks based on year 12 results, VET study, higher education study, employment), you will generally be considered on the highest rank.

You are also required to meet relevant subject prerequisites for the course you are applying for. This may be done through successfully completed Senior secondary subjects (or equivalent). Not all subject prerequisites are able to be met through certificate level study.

Any additional entry requirements must also be satisfied.

Applicants with work and life experience

Year 12 results (ATAR/selection rank) do not expire once you have left school. Whether this result is considered for an offer to a course will depend on whether you have additional qualifications (including other recognised qualifications completed while at school or post school).

This includes formal qualifications such as Senior External Examination results, higher education study (e.g. Bachelor degree level and higher), VET study such as competency-based and graded AQF Certificates III and IV (completed), diplomas and sub-degree level study and bridging and preparation courses. Other post-secondary professional and paraprofessional qualifications including some creative arts, language and civil aviation qualifications, memberships of professional associations for which qualifying exams are undertaken and police, emergency defence force service will be also considered.

You may also use admission pathways such as employment experience and the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) (age restrictions apply).  

If you have several selection ranks calculated (e.g. ranks based on year 12 results, VET study, higher education study, employment), you will generally be considered on the highest rank.

You are also required to meet relevant subject prerequisites for the course you are applying for. This will be satisfied by successfully completing Senior secondary subjects (or equivalent). Any additional entry requirements must also be satisfied.

Bridging or enabling Course Entry

UniSQ offers a range of bridging and enabling course options if your previous studies or experience don’t meet the threshold entry requirements. Programs may assist in developing your English language skills, your academic skills and your confidence. Check UniSQ’s website for more information about the pathway programs available.

Applicants with recent secondary education

Current Year 12 ATAR-eligible students will be assigned a selection rank based on their ATAR and will be considered for an offer based on this selection rank (or other recognised qualifications undertaken while at school).

Current Year 12 students who are ineligible to receive an ATAR will be considered for an offer based on their selection rank from other recognised qualifications undertaken while at school.

Current International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma students will be assigned a selection rank based on the score from the completed IB Diploma. As agreed by admissions centres around Australia, the IB score is converted to a 'combined rank'. The combined rank is on the same scale as the ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank). This is then converted to a QTAC selection rank. For more information, read about International Baccalaureate (IB) studies. IB Diploma students will be considered for an offer based on this selection rank (or other recognised qualifications undertaken while at school).

Results from Home Schooling, Accelerated Christian Education and other non-standard Year 12 programs (with SAT tests) may also be assigned a selection rank and considered for an offer based on this selection rank (or other recognised qualifications undertaken while at school). Some exceptions may apply to courses with additional entry requirements (see below). Contact UniSQ for more information.

Applicants with Overseas Year 12 Study

UniSQ will consider equivalent overseas Year 12 qualifications for admissions purposes. Contact UniSQ for more information. If you have secondary or tertiary qualifications from countries where English is not the standard language of instruction, you must provide evidence of English language proficiency.

Other Qualifications Completed in Year 12

Other recognised qualifications completed when at school such as completed competency-based and graded AQF certificates III and IV (completed), diplomas, higher education study, and some creative arts qualifications (in the areas of music, dance, and speech) will also be assigned a selection rank.

You are also required to meet relevant subject prerequisites for the course you are applying for. This will be satisfied by successful completion of Senior secondary subjects (or equivalent). Any additional entry requirements must also be satisfied.

ATAR/Selection Rank Related Adjustments

Current Year 12 Applicants

There are a number of special entry schemes for admission. Applicants can be allocated a maximum adjustment of ten ranks across all schemes.

Year 12 Bonus Scheme

Current Year 12 students may be awarded an adjustment to their rank for passing a variety of Year 12 subjects. A comprehensive list of these subjects can be found on our UniSQ website. If eligible, rank adjustments are automatically applied to your UniSQ preferences in your QTAC application.

Bonus Schools Scheme

If you are a current year 12 graduating from one of our UniSQ Bonus schools you may be awarded 3 ranks. If eligible, these adjustments are automatically applied to your UniSQ preferences in your QTAC application. Please see our UniSQ website for a full list of the eligible schools.

Elite Athlete Program

The aim of UniSQ’s Elite Athlete Program is to assist our student athletes in balancing their sporting and academic commitments. UniSQ has dedicated support staff for students considering and continuing in the Elite Athlete Program to ensure that they find the right fit.

Special consideration may be given for entry to UniSQ programs once eligibility for the Elite Athlete Program has been confirmed by UniSQ. Special consideration of admissions criteria will be assessed upon request on a case-by-case basis.

Some scholarships are also offered for students studying at UniSQ who are registered or eligible to register as a member of the UniSQ Elite Athlete Program. For an athlete to be recognised by UniSQ as an Elite Athlete, you must be identified by the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), state or territory institute or academy of sport or a relevant national association as outlined in the AIS Guiding Principles. If your circumstances fall outside these guidelines, you may still apply for consideration as USQ will consider all sports and sporting commitments. For more information contact UniSQ.

Regional Preference Scheme

UniSQ recognises the educational challenges faced by students from regional, rural and remote Australia. If you live in an eligible area, your rank may be adjusted by two ranks for entry into UniSQ courses. This scheme applies to people living in areas classified as "Outer Regional", "Remote" or "Very Remote" under the Australian Standard Geographic Classification (ASGC) Remoteness Areas. If eligible, rank adjustments are automatically applied to your UniSQ preferences in your QTAC application.

Strengthening Communities Scheme

UniSQ supports strong and resilient local communities and may adjust your rank by two ranks to those who live in one of UniSQ’s local communities. If you haven’t previously studied at university and live in Ipswich, Springfield or Toowoomba and elect to study on-campus, you’ll be eligible for this scheme. Rank adjustments are automatically applied to your UniSQ preferences in your QTAC application.

Educational Access Scheme

The Educational Access Scheme is for current and former students who have experienced difficult circumstances that have adversely impacted their studies. See Educational Access Scheme for more information.

High Achievers Scheme

UniSQ recognises academic excellence and ensures students who achieve an ATAR score of 91.15, or above, and who meet all other admission criteria are guaranteed entry into most UniSQ programs. This is automatically applied to your UniSQ preferences.

FIRST IN FAMILY

UniSQ recognises it can be daunting for those who are first in family to attend university and will award two adjustment ranks to those applicants who do not have any immediate family members that have studied at university. This is automatically applied to your UniSQ preferences.

Non-Year 12 Applicants

The Elite Athlete Program, High Achievers, First in Family and Educational Access (EAS) schemes are available to non-year 12 applicants. Applicants can be allocated a maximum rank adjustment of ten ranks across all schemes. 

Other Admissions Options

UniSQ’s Head Start program allows eligible Years 10, 11 and 12 students to study university courses while at school. Students who successfully complete a Head Start course receive an ATAR/Rank guarantee when applying for a related program to their Head Start course if they don’t achieve the required ATAR/Rank published for entry. This guarantee applies when all other admission criteria (including English language proficiency) for the program are met.

Criteria that may apply in addition to ATAR/Selection Rank

Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences (Medicine Pathway) requires a University Clinical Aptitude Test and interview.

Bachelor of Creative Arts and Community Wellbeing requires an interview accompanied by portfolio.

Bachelor of Creative Arts (Honours) GPA from completed undergraduate degree in Creative Arts.

Bachelor of Education will require a personal statement to address non-academic entry criteria in addition to satisfying other entry requirements and the ATAR/selection rank threshold.

Bachelor of Laws (Honours) GPA from completed undergraduate degree in Law.

Bachelor of Midwifery (Graduate Entry) GPA from completed Bachelor of Nursing degree used. Requires Registered Nurse (Division 1) Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) registration.

Bachelor of Music requires an audition and interview.

Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) GPA from first two years of Social Work degree.

Bachelor of Science (Honours) GPA from completed undergraduate degree in area of Honours study.

Bachelor of Theatre requires an audition and interview.

Bachelor of Visual Art requires an interview accompanied by portfolio.

Diploma of Multidisciplinary Studies requires students to be 18 years of age.

Undergraduate Certificate of Child and Family Studies requires students to be 17 years of age.

Undergraduate Certificate of Computing/Information Technology requires students to be 17 years of age.

Undergraduate Certificate of Engineering Fundamentals requires students to be 17 years of age.

Undergraduate Certificate of Psychology Fundamentals requires students to be 17 years of age.

Undergraduate Certificate of STEM Foundations requires students to be 17 years of age.

Undergraduate Certificate of Surveying requires students to be 17 years of age.

Undergraduate Certificate of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) requires students to be 17 years of age.

Undergraduate Certificate of Teaching (Primary) requires students to be 17 years of age.

Undergraduate Certificate of Teaching (Secondary) requires students to be 17 years of age

Undergraduate Certificate of University Studies requires students to be 18 years of age.

Additional information

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

UniSQ’s College for First Nations is located across UniSQ’s three campuses. The main purpose of the college is to encourage and assist the further education of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.

Inherent Academic Requirements

Inherent Requirements are the necessary components of UniSQ’s programs and courses that ensure students are capable of achieving the designated learning outcomes. This includes giving consideration to students under various circumstances. Some circumstances may, include but are not limited to, disabilities and/or health conditions, to arrange reasonable adjustments and enable appropriate achievement of these requirements.

These requirements are not barriers to entering a program but are considered throughout the enrolment procedure.

Domestic Applicants with Overseas Study

UniSQ will consider equivalent overseas qualifications for admissions purposes. If you have secondary or tertiary qualifications from countries where English is not the standard language of instruction, you must provide evidence of English language proficiency.

How to apply

Domestic students applying for undergraduate study apply through QTAC. International students studying Year 12 in Australia apply through UniSQ. All other international students contact UniSQ. Students considering postgraduate study apply directly to UniSQ.

Courses available by direct entry

UniSQ accepts direct applications for bridging and enabling, postgraduate and research courses. UniSQ undergraduate transfer students and previous UniSQ students can also apply directly to UniSQ. Year 12 students and new to UniSQ undergraduate applicants apply through QTAC.

Enrolment

Timing of Offers

UniSQ makes year round offers for most courses. In preparation for the start of the study period, refer to UniSQ’s website for orientation and other important dates.

Offers

QTAC applicants are notified of their UniSQ offer by email and must respond to their offer online by the due date. Applicants accepting their offer can find enrolment information via a link in their QTAC application or via UniSQ’s website.

Deferment

Eligible Undergraduate programs can be deferred for up to one academic year provided deferral does not jeopardise the conduct of the program. Defer your QTAC offer through QTAC or email UniSQ to request deferment for your direct entry offer. Read more about deferment on the UniSQ website. 

Credit Transfer

Students can apply to have prior courses completed at an external institution to be considered for credit into a UniSQ program. Courses completed internally at UniSQ can also be considered for credit or can be considered for transfer into a new UniSQ program where appropriate. Students are also encouraged to apply for credit based on work and life experience where they can show evidence of having met the learning objectives of individual UniSQ courses. Early Entry

Become a UniSQ student sooner with an offer to study an undergraduate degree based on a recommendation from your principal. Eligible Year 12 graduating students can apply with support from their school principal to receive an early offer from UniSQ in as early as September – before ATAR and results are released. This enables students to plan for their future now and find out where they will be studying the following year. UniSQ listed as your first preference, a completed Early Entry application form and a letter of support from your principal are all that’s required – applications need to be lodged by Friday 11 October 2024.

Financial assistance

New Scholarships for School Leavers

Discover now what scholarships are available, and those coming soon. The below scholarships are automatically awarded to students who place UniSQ as their first preference and meet the qualifying results.

Chancellor’s Excellence Scholarship - awarded to 2024 school leavers with an ATAR 97 or above. Total scholarship value of $24,000 over 4 years of study (or $18,000 over 3 years) including a $5000 Study Abroad package, participation in a leadership and development program, plus the opportunity to participate in the Student Ambassador program.

Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence Scholarship- awarded to 2024 school leavers with an ATAR 88 or above. Total scholarship value of $20,000 over 4 years of study (or $15,000 over 3 years), plus the opportunity to participate in the Student Ambassador program.

Study Areas

UniSQ offers degrees in Agriculture and Environment, Arts and Humanities, Aviation, Business and Management, Education and Teaching, Engineering, Information and Communication Technology, Law and Criminology, Media and Communication, Nursing and Allied Health, Psychology and Human Services, Sciences, Surveying and Built Environment, and Visual and Performing Arts. Degrees are delivered with a focus on producing students that are ready to engage in professional roles upon graduation.

Flexible entry

For students who don’t have an ATAR/selection rank or don’t have the required ATAR/selection for the degree they want to study, UniSQ offers pathway options. Some of UniSQ’s degrees have diplomas or associate degrees, where students can study the same courses as a first-year bachelor’s degree, but with lower entry requirements. Students who successfully pass these courses can then apply to transfer to their preferred degree in the following study period or year. UniSQ also offers pathway programs for students who do not have an ATAR or selection rank and want to study at university.

UniSQ’s Degree Advisors are on hand by phone, call, chat or email to help answer any questions students may have. In addition, UniSQ offers services to assist students including career guidance and employment services, health and medical, counselling, disability support, orientation, financial assistance, First Nations support, elite athlete support and academic learning services.

Career Advice

UniSQ offers one-on-one career planning sessions through our Careers Education Team. The career planning advice that you will receive from these sessions will help you to understand how your values, attributes and life experiences contribute to your career goals. Work Integrated Learning

At UniSQ, we aim to offer a formal, organised experience in which students participate in their industry environments to complete authentic work whilst supervised by industry staff. This mechanism is proven to improve graduate employability whilst best preparing UniSQ students to be effective when moving into the work force. UniSQ’s Work Integrated Learning model also offers financial assistance to UniSQ students attending a form of placement or residential school through the Placement and Residential School Bursaries.

Study Abroad

At UniSQ, students have the opportunity to travel and study overseas for one or two semesters, through Exchange and Study Abroad programs. The Exchange program allows students to participate in an overseas study experience with one of UniSQ’s Exchange Partner Universities. The Study Abroad program allows students to apply to a foreign university of their choice. Both programs allow students to balance study and travel with the continued benefit of UniSQ’s Student Support Services.

Student accommodation

Enjoy the on-campus experience with Residential College accommodation at our Toowoomba campus. Choose from three different colleges, each with different living arrangements, such as meals provided or shared kitchen facilities. UniSQ’s Residential Colleges provide convenient and affordable accommodation for long and short stay periods.

A range of off-campus accommodation options close to UniSQ’s other campuses is also available. The Education City Residential Village, 100m from our Springfield campus, offers students modern townhouse accommodation options. Staff at our Ipswich campus can also assist students in finding a place to live nearby, with a range of independently owned and operated accommodation options available.
