Admission criteria

All applicants

We look forward to receiving applications from school leavers and non-school leavers. Here are some tips to make sure your application has the greatest chance of success:

Read The University of Western Australia Information on the TISC website carefully. Take note of the important dates so you don't miss an important deadline. If we don't hear from you by a particular date, this may cause some problems but we'll always work with you to find a solution. Be sure to get in touch with us if this occurs.

Consult our Undergraduate Course Guide for more information about our globally recognised courses. Also, check the Future Students website for the latest information.

Check that you've met the prerequisites or recommended courses for your intended area of study (see individual course entries on the UWA website or via the TISC Course Search), and that you satisfy the University's English language competence requirement. If you've got any questions at all, contact UWA Admissions at admissions@uwa.edu.au or phone 131 892.

Classification of applicants

Most applicants to UWA are considered in two groups: You're a Group 1 (school leaver) applicant if you've never undertaken any tertiary level study (diploma or above); you're automatically a Group 2 applicant if you've undertaken tertiary level study (diploma or above) or have not completed a school leaving qualification in the last two years.

Group 1 applicants are ranked for selection according to their ATAR (or equivalent).

Entry to the Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) and most Direct Pathways is only available to Group 1 applicants.

Applicants with Higher Education study

If you have studied at another university, you may be able to use the results from your previous study to gain entry. Contact the University for further information.

Applicants with Vocational Education and Training (VET) study

UWA requires completion of an Australian Qualifications Framework Diploma to meet minimum entry requirements. English language requirements must also be satisfied, as well as any course prerequisites. Contact the University for further information.

Applicants with work and life experience

Anyone who is aged 20 years or older on 1 March (for Semester One entry) or 1 August (for Semester Two entry) qualifies for our mature-age entry pathways.

Talk with the Future Students Centre before you sign up for anything to select the most appropriate pathway taking into account your previous study history.

Four-course Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR): This can be suitable if you want to get into a course with a number of prerequisites (such as engineering) or if you are aiming to secure a Direct Pathway to one of our professional postgraduate degrees (provided you haven't completed any previous tertiary study).

Two-course ATAR: In this abbreviated version of the normal Year 12 program, an Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) is calculated from only two WA Certificate of Education (WACE) courses. This entry route is suitable if you are aiming for courses with one or two prerequisites (for example, majors in science or commerce).

Special Tertiary Admissions Test: If you are an Australian student, but did not complete Year 12, you can meet the admission requirements for UWA by taking the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT). To use the test for admission to UWA you must be at least 20 years of age by March 1 of the year you are entering University (or 1 August if applying for Semester Two/mid-year entry) and not have a school leaving qualification that makes you eligible for admission. You can use STAT to gain admission to the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Science. You must also meet any prerequisites for your intended major(s). The minimum level of achievement required for consideration through this entry route is: 140 in the Multiple Choice Test (Verbal component) and 160 in the Written English test. (different thresholds apply for test results achieved before May 2010).

UWA Mature-age access program (UWA-MAP): The University offers mature-aged people (aged 20 or more before 1 March 2019), with little or no previous background in tertiary study, the opportunity to commence study on a trial basis. Successful completion of a provisional enrolment program, and satisfaction of course requirements, will enable full enrolment in your degree course with credit for units already passed.

Applicants with recent secondary education

You're a Group 1 (school leaver) applicant if you've never undertaken any tertiary level study (diploma or above) and completed your secondary education in the last two years.

Group 1 applicants are ranked for selection according to their ATAR (or equivalent).

Entry to the Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) and most Direct Pathways is only available to Group 1 applicants.

Additional information

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

The Provisional Entry Scheme from the School of Indigenous Studies offers places to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who do not meet the University's standard entrance requirements. Places are available for undergraduate courses through the Mature-age Access Program and other standard pathways, as well as by completing the University's Aboriginal Orientation Course.

The Aboriginal Orientation Course is a 6 to 12-month bridging course and is available for applicants who require additional preparation for university studies.

Further details and application forms are available from the School of Indigenous Studies by email or download the application form from the Aboriginal Orientation Course page.

Domestic applicants with overseas qualifications

Check our website for a list of overseas qualifications accepted for entry to UWA.

English language proficiency

Successful university study demands a high level of English language skills. Many applicants will be able to demonstrate English language competence through satisfactory performance in the required English subjects when they were at school. If you're not able to demonstrate English language competence in this way, then you'll need satisfactory performance in an alternative UWA-approved test of English. A list of approved English language tests is available on our website. UWA does require all applicants to demonstrate satisfactory English language competence before an offer can be made.

Additional entry pathways

Fairway UWA is a program that provides students completing Year 12 under difficult circumstances with an alternate pathway to UWA. Fairway UWA is an alternative entry pathway and comprehensive support program for students completing Year 12 under challenging circumstances. The program provides academic, financial and personal support, and it is responsive to individual student needs, throughout their final year of secondary school and during their university studies.

First in Family: Our First in the Family program is designed to support students in achieving their goals to be the first in their immediate family to attend university. If you've received an ATAR of 75–79.99, and you will be the first in your family to attend University, you may still be eligible for a place at UWA. You’ll then be able to join our community and study one of our four undergraduate degrees.

Further information on admission entry pathways is available on our website.

Selection Rank adjustment factors

Broadway UWA is designed to ensure access to our courses is available to the broadest range of students with the potential to succeed at university. The Broadway scheme allows eligible students from a Broadway-identified Western Australian school to receive an automated ATAR adjustment if the school at which they completed their final WACE examinations is identified as a Broadway school in their year of application or was identified as a Broadway school in the year the student completed their WACE.

There are two main categories of adjustment for eligible students. Students with an ATAR of 75.00 to 79.95: Eligible students with an ATAR of 75.00 to 79.95 will receive an adjusted selection rank of 80.00 to allow them to receive an offer into the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Biomedical Science, Bachelor of Commerce or Bachelor of Science, subject to their TISC preference order, provided they completed the requirements for the WA Certificate of Education achieved UWA’s English Language Competence and satisfied any prerequisites that may apply.

Students with an ATAR of 80.00 or above who meet the above criteria will also receive a positive adjustment to their selection rank. For this purpose, schools have been divided into two groups based on different levels of school-based disadvantage: Tier A– a Broadway UWA-identified school at or below the WA median ICSEA score and Tier B– all other Broadway UWA-identified schools. Selection rank adjustments, up to a maximum of 98.00, are available for students with an ATAR of 80.00 or above.

The Broadway UWA adjustment will be automatically calculated by TISC for current WA Year 12 students.

Enrolment

Acceptance of offer

We'll provide you with all the information you need to complete your enrolment if you're made an offer for UWA. If you won't be in Western Australia during December - February 2019, you will be able to accept your offer and enrol online using the link provided in your offer.

Advanced standing and credit transfer

Applications for credit/advanced standing are dealt with on a case-by-case basis. The credit granted will be largely dependent on the overlap between your previous study and the courses offered at the University, although non-specific credit (which doesn't confer exemption from normal prerequisites) is also available. The amount and nature of the credit granted may be limited by particular University rules governing the structure of degrees. In general, at a minimum, you must complete the final one and a half years of study for the degree at the University.

Deferment

If you deferred a place at UWA in 2018 and you're now ready to commence your studies, simply re-apply and you'll be offered a place.

If you wish to apply for other courses as well as your deferred course, you can do this through TISC. You apply for other courses by placing the new course as a higher preference than the code of your deferred course. These higher preferences will be considered in competition with other applicants, but you'll have the assurance of your guaranteed place in your deferred course if your application for higher preferences isn't successful.

If you're considering taking a gap year in 2019, you'll find details of the deferral process included with your offer. If you're offered a place and choose to defer, please notify the Admissions Team of this by the deadline specified on your offer.
