The University of Adelaide has been a cornerstone of educational and cultural life in South Australia since 1874.

A member of the prestigious Group of Eight research-intensive universities, it has an enviable international reputation for both teaching and research. More than 100 undergraduate and 200 postgraduate programs are offered in a wide variety of disciplines.

In 2017, Adelaide’s total enrolment was more than 27,000 students, including around 7,000 international students from 95 countries. The University comprises three main campuses: North Terrace in the city of Adelaide, Roseworthy near Gawler and Waite at Urrbrae.

Admission criteria

All applicants

Special consideration

Special consideration may be given to applicants who have special circumstances, including a long term medical condition, that may have disadvantaged them in their studies and which they wish to be taken into account in the assessment of their application. Applicants who seek special consideration as part of the application process will be able to download a confidential questionnaire and information on the supporting documentation that will be required.

Equity

The Universities Equity Scheme will apply adjustments in two ways: to all applicants in certain specified schools and to eligible applicants in other schools. Eligible applicants will receive 5 points in the calculation of their university aggregate.

The scheme applies to all degrees offered at the University of Adelaide.

Entry pathways

Whether you have just completed year 12, have no previous qualifications or you’ve already studied at a tertiary level through university, TAFE or another registered training organisation (RTO), the University of Adelaide offers a range of entry pathways to university study.

English requirements

As English is the language of instruction at the University of Adelaide, proficiency in speaking, listening to, reading and writing English is essential.

Age requirements

The University of Adelaide has no minimum age requirements. However, to be eligible for special entry you must be aged over 18 by 1 February (1 July for midyear) in the year you wish to commence your study and not have studied more than two years of equivalent full-time study at higher education level, unless you have had no enrolments during the preceding two years.

If you have completed study at another institution, you can apply for credit towards your University of Adelaide program.

Applicants with VET Study

Recognition of VET study

Have you completed a TAFE or VET qualification at a certificate IV or higher? Your completed qualification can gain you entry to many of our degrees.

For students that have studied at either TAFE SA or other Registered Training Organisations (RTOs), most Certificate IV Courses (including former Advanced Certificates or equivalent) meet the minimum entry requirements for a wide range of our undergraduate degrees. In some instances a successfully completed Diploma or Advanced Diploma will be required to meet the minimum entry requirements.

Applicants with Work and Life experience

Minimum ATAR requirements

The University of Adelaide does not specify a minimum ATAR for our degrees however selection is competitive. To be eligible for admission to a University of Adelaide coursework degree, you must meet both the minimum entry requirement for that degree and any degree-specific prerequisites where specified. This may include auditions, interviews or education statements for some of our degrees.

Applicants with no formal qualification

Applicants with a recent secondary education (Current, 2017 and 2018)

Domestic school leaver applicants are selected for entry to degrees at the University of Adelaide:

  • completing the SACE or interstate equivalent, and
  • achieving a competitive Selection Rank (ATAR), and
  • meeting any prerequisite requirements and other essential requirements for admission as listed in the SATAC Guide or on our Degree-Finder website.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

The University of Adelaide welcomes applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Wirltu Yarlu is responsible for engaging with and recruiting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as well as providing support to students during their time here at the University of Adelaide. Domestic applicants with overseas qualifications

Domestic applicants with overseas qualifications must have fulfilled any prerequisite requirements and: 

  • completed overseas qualifications equivalent to SACE, or
  • undertaken higher education study for the equivalent of at least one semester full-time at a recognised overseas institution , or
  • hold a completed award equivalent to an AQF Certificate IV level or above. Applicants who hold qualifications that were obtained overseas are eligible, subject to a SATAC comparison of the qualifications. 
English language proficiency

For admission to a University of Adelaide program, international applicants are expected to be proficient in English, as demonstrated by:

  • passing an approved test;
  • completing an Academic English program; or
  • meeting and approved alternative requirement.

Enrolment 

Enrol for the first time

Shortly after receiving your offer from SATAC, students will receive an email from the University of Adelaide including their University of Adelaide student number and providing instructions on how to go about activating their student account. Subsequently new students will be able to access the University's online systems, start planning their timetables, enrol, check dates, attend orientation and prepare for lectures to begin from early March for most degrees.

Advanced standing and credit transfer (policies at the time of enrolment)

If you have completed study at another institution, you can apply for credit towards your University of Adelaide program.

Deferment

Students who have been offered a position to study at the University of Adelaide can choose to defer the commencement of their studies for up to two years.
