The Sydney College of Divinity is a registered Higher Education Provider owned by an ecumenical consortium of Australian private colleges, which are its Member Institutions.

Courses offered by the Sydney College of Divinity are run by the member institutions (also called “Teaching Bodies”), with the exception of courses with SCD Graduate Research School and SCD Korean School of Theology which are run directly by the SCD.

Policies and Services

Admission Criteria

Applicants with higher education study

Each SCD course has its own particular admission criteria.

For general reference, note the following:

  • Undergraduate: Possible admission - Bachelor, Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, Master of Divinity
  • Undergraduate (theological): Possible admission - Master of Arts, Master of Theology
  • Postgraduate: Possible admission - Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, Master of Divinity
  • Postgraduate (theological): Possible admission - Doctorate.

Previous study in theological related disciplines would be considered for further credit in courses applied for.

Applicants with vocational education and training (VET) study

  • Certificate IV, Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma: Possible admission - Diploma, Bachelor
  • Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma (theological): Possible admission - Master of Arts

If the VET study was in a theological related discipline credit would be granted.

Applicants with work and life experience

Mature age entry into undergraduate courses is available to potential students aged 20 and over.

Professional entry into the Graduate Certificate is available to potential students who have considerable professional senior ministry experience (at least 5 years in a senior leadership role).

Applicants with recent secondary education (within the past two years)

Australian Year 12 students
  • No ATAR: Possible admission - Diploma of Ministry, Diploma of Theology, Diploma of Christian Studies
  • 65+:Possible admission - Associate Degree of Christian Thought and Practice, Bachelor of Ministry, Bachelor of Theology.
ATAR-related adjustments

There are no ATAR-related adjustments.

Criteria that may apply in addition to ATAR

There are no further criteria to be considered in addition to ATAR.

Other admission options

Mature age entry
  • Age 20: Possible admission - Diploma in Ministry, Diploma in Theology
  • Age 21+: Possible admission - Diploma of Christian Studies, Associate Degree of Christian Thought and Practice, Bachelor of Ministry, Bachelor of Theology.
Interstate Year 12

Admission criteria are the same as for NSW students. The state-based university entry score is converted to an ATAR. For a student from Queensland, the OP cut off is 16 or less for admission into the Associate Degree of Christian Thought and Practice, the Bachelor of Ministry and the Bachelor of Theology.

Finished secondary education more than two years ago

Students with a qualifying ATAR are eligible for admission into undergraduate course up to 5 years after they complete year 12. At this point mature age entry would apply.

Bridging and enabling course entry

There are no bridging or enabling courses that lead to entry into SCD awards.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are welcome to apply for admission and are treated equally with all other admissions.

Domestic applicants with overseas qualifications

The equivalence of overseas qualifications to Australian qualifications is evaluated with the help of the Government’s Country Education Profiles (CEP). The equivalence is then used to match against the admissions requirements for entry into SCD awards.

English language proficiency

If students have undertaken their previous studies in an overseas country, they may have to provide proof of proficiency in English to gain entry into a Sydney College of Divinity award.

Students do not have to provide proof of proficiency in English if they have:

  • completed an accredited award in English at one AQF level below the award that they are seeking admission into; or
  • have successfully completed senior secondary study in English; or
  • have successfully completed at least one year of full-time university study in English in the field of Humanities.

Students must provide proof of proficiency in English if they have undertaken all their qualifications in a language other than English.

How to apply

For undergraduate and postgraduate coursework programs, apply directly to the Teaching Body.

For postgraduate research courses, apply directly to the Sydney College of Divinity.

Enrolment

The Registrar of the relevant Teaching Body will advise the student of their successful entry (or otherwise) into an SCD course. This is followed by unit registration, for the subject/s the student wants to study, with the Registrar of the Teaching Body.

Advanced standing/Recognised Prior Learning

Students who have completed prior study can apply for credit through the registrar of the relevant Teaching Body. The registrar will also communicate the result of the application to the student.

Application for credit for skills and knowledge from work and life experience is also available. This requires submission of a portfolio that shows how the skills and life experience align with units within the student’s course of study.

Intention to apply for credit is included on the enrolment application form.

Deferral

Application for deferral is made directly with the Registrar of the Teaching Body.

Tuition Fees

Tuition fees are due prior to the commencement of a unit of study. Details of course fees and the tuition assurance scheme are in section 10 of the SCD Handbook.
