Special consideration

Institutional access and equity queries should be directed to:

Contact phone number: 1300 135 045
Institutional web page: VTAC Entry Access Scheme
E-mail address: study@latrobe.edu.au

Access & equity through VTAC (SEAS)

Special Entry categories provide mechanisms to encourage the participation from persons who have experienced disadvantage and groups underrepresented in higher education. Check our website for detailed information about our access schemes, including schemes for Indigenous applicants, rural and regional applicants and applicants who have experienced formal out-of-home care (e.g. foster care, residential care, kinship care, being a ward of the State).

Access & equity outside of SEAS

The University encourages participation from persons who have experienced disadvantage and groups underrepresented in higher education. We have a range of entry schemes that can help you get into a La Trobe course. These include the Rural and Regional Student Access Scheme, access for Indigenous Australian applicants and students who have experienced financial, social or medical hardship.

Minimum Age requirement

The University only admits students who are at least 16 years of age at the time they will commence their course.

Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT)

The STAT Multiple Choice is an aptitude test designed to assess a range of competencies considered important for success in tertiary study

La Trobe will consider STAT Multiple Choice results from Recent Year 12 (2016 or 2017) and Non-Year 12 applicants when selecting most of its undergraduate courses. The VTAC course entries contain specific details regarding whether the STAT will be considered.

Note: STAT Multiple Choice will not be considered from current (2018) Year 12 applicants.

For more information, view the courses on our website.

Year 12 to uni pathways

La Trobe offers two innovative pathways as an alternative to ATAR. The two pathways invite Year 12 students to study La Trobe courses free and online, earning a score which the University will use to calculate an ‘ATAR-equivalent score’ instead of an ATAR. In doing so, students can demonstrate their academic achievements and university potential in a new way.

Achieve at La Trobe allows students to study a La Trobe subject while finishing VCE. Prepare for La Trobe offers VCE and VCAL students micro-subjects from La Trobe’s online Tertiary Preparation Program.

These pathways offer subject credit and if a student’s ATAR is their higher result, that’s what La Trobe will consider in their application. For more information, read about undergraduate pathways for school leavers

La Trobe College Australia Diploma Pathway

La Trobe College Australia (formerly known as La Trobe Melbourne) is a pathway college based on campus in Bundoora that offers diploma courses, leading to second year Bachelor degrees at La Trobe University.

Choose from study areas including health sciences, bioscience, engineering, media and communication, business, information technology and psychology.

You'll get full credit for your studies and once you've fulfilled all requirements, progress into second year.

Applicants with a HE study

Advanced Standing - Credit for prior study

Advanced Standing is the recognition of previous study or learning that can be counted towards a qualification. This can reduce the number of subjects required to complete your course.

The amount of credit received depends on the level and relevance of your previous tertiary study and the number of units completed.

There are some courses where there is only admission into Year 1 of the course. In these cases, there is limited advanced standing. See webpage below for limited entry courses.

Applicants with a VET Study

Pathways from TAFE and other VET providers

A pathway through a TAFE or VET provider is one way to get into many of La Trobe's undergraduate degrees.

We recognise the value of previous study and can generally offer you advanced standing (credit) if you've completed a TAFE course or diploma at another institution. See our Advanced Standing webpage.

In addition, if you're studying a VET or TAFE course with an approved current articulation pathway to the University, you may be eligible to apply through direct entry, rather than VTAC.

Year 12 completion is not a prerequisite but you must be 18 years of age. Successful completion of the program supports entry into select undergraduate courses.

Aspire Early Admissions program

The Aspire program recognises the skills and experience you've gained through your contribution to the community through leadership, volunteering or initiative, and rewards you with an early offer into La Trobe.

Successful applicants receive an early conditional offer in September for their chosen course, along with minimum ATAR requirements and a study revision program designed to support you to succeed through the rest of Year 12.

VCE Plus

VCE Plus is an exciting opportunity for high-achieving secondary school students to complete two first-year La Trobe University subjects concurrently with their Year 12 studies and have these recognised as part of their VCE.

Completing both VCE Plus subjects and satisfying any other course prerequisites and requirements also puts you in a strong position for entry into a relevant La Trobe University course with credits for the University study already completed.

Elite Athlete Program

La Trobe University recognises the unique needs of student athletes who compete in elite sport while studying.

Applicants who are eligible for the La Trobe Elite Athlete Program and can demonstrate that their sporting commitments impacted on their previous studies, may have a five aggregate point adjustment factor applied.

This adjustment is only applied to domestic undergraduate applicants who also satisfy the published course selection requirements.

For more information, read about the eligibility for the elite-athlete program.

La Trobe Priority Access Program

The Priority Access Program awards eligible current Year 12 students with selection rank adjustments for entry into our undergraduate courses

Students may be awarded multiple adjustment factors under more than one category, with a maximum of 15 aggregate points awarded through the Program.

  • Priority School
  • Priority Campus
  • Regional School

Adjustment factors are automatically awarded when students list a La Trobe course as one of their preferences. There is no need to apply separately for the Program.

Additional information

Health placements

Opportunities are offered to students with a mandatory health placement component in their course, with local and international industry partners.

These placements give you the opportunity to integrate theory with practice, further develop your skills through supportive professional environments and gain essential working knowledge of current industry practice.

Placements sometimes happen during weekends and outside University teaching periods and may require that you live away from home.

Course Transfer

Currently enrolled La Trobe coursework students wishing to transfer to a course of study in another College, School or discipline within the University must apply using the 'Application for Course Transfer' form, rather than through VTAC.

The application form is available from the University's Course Transfer webpage.

Application deadlines for course transfers vary between Colleges and entry to some courses is not available through this Course Transfer process.

First Nations applicants

Indigenous Australians are welcome to contact Indigenous Student Services staff for advice about our courses, application procedures, scholarships and other aspects of studying at La Trobe University. Specific initiatives include I-Aspire, a leadership program connecting young Indigenous students from Year 9 - 12 who are passionate about making a difference in their community. WIL subjects generally involve an application process as admittance often requires Subject Coordinator approval.
