About
The Kollel Beth HaTalmud Yehuda Fishman Institute, located in Balaclava, Victoria, is arguably the premier address for Torah-true higher education and learning in Melbourne. From humble beginnings in the early 1980’s, the Kollel is now a vibrant and constantly-growing community in its own right, and a central address for any and all seeking Torah education. The Kollel’s purpose (as per the Kollel’s Memorandum of Association, Feb 1980) is to “improve, elevate, promote and encourage excellence in the teaching, study and understanding of the principles and practices of the Orthodox Jewish religion and to foster, promote and encourage the strict observance of the tenets, laws, customs and usages of the Orthodox Jewish religion”.
The Kollel is a not-for-profit-organisation, a registered charity, and is an accredited higher-education provider.
As such, in addition to a strong full-time student body, the Kollel provides Torah education in several formats, to the whole community. We do this through varied educational programs, including evening classes on a wide range of topics and our University Students PLP program.
Kollel’s academic year is timed according to the Hebrew calendar, with the Winter semester commencing around October/November, and the Summer semester commencing April/May.
Prospective candidates for the course are invited to contact Kollel via email well in advance of the semester commencement date, to ensure timely processing of application.

Additional information
All potential students are assessed equally, regardless of race, heritage, or nationality.
Although the subject matter for our course is primarily in either Hebrew or Ancient Aramaic, the lectures, Chaburohs, and Chavrusoh sessions are conducted in English. It is therefore a requirement for any student enrolled in the course that he/she possesses sufficient command of the English language that will allow them to fully engage and participate in all areas of the course, particularly the group learning sessions.
