Jazz Music Institute (JMI) is the hub of jazz education and performance in Australia. JMI is committed to providing high-quality and holistic jazz education programs of an international standard, focused on performance. To achieve this mission, JMI runs a multitude of jazz music education programs ranging from a Bachelors’ degree to casual classes that are delivered by some of Australia’s finest jazz musicians and educators. JMI is also committed to enriching the community through jazz music by providing platforms for its performance and development. We do this by running our own jazz club, JMI Live, and presenting hundreds of performances a year throughout the community. 

Based in Brisbane, JMI has been delivering courses in jazz since 1997. JMI is a Higher Education Provider and Registered Training Organisation that is accredited by the Australian Government regulatory bodies, Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) and Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA).

Open Days

JMI offers information sessions for anyone interested in enrolling in our courses. In this information session you can:

  • have a meet and greet with JMI staff
  • ask questions relating to course and audition requirements
  • have a walk around our campus and see the facilities on offer

Policies and Services

Admissions Criteria

All Applicants

Entry into JMI’s courses is through a successful audition only. The audition requirements are the same for any student applying for entry into JMI’s programs. Audition requirements for each course is available on the Jazz Music Institute website.

No ATAR score is required for entry into JMI’s programs.

Decisions on auditions are made by an audition panel comprised of key academic personnel at JMI. Decisions will be made in accordance with JMI’s Admissions Policy.

There is an expected 2-week turnaround from when an applicant performs and audition to when they find out their audition results. Applicants will be notified via letter in the mail of their results unless otherwise notified or requested.

Applicants with Higher Education study

Applicants that have previously undertaken Higher Education study will be eligible for Advanced Standing through the audition process. Applicants looking to gain advanced standing (credit) for previous study will need to bring all documentation of their prior study along in their audition.

An assessment will be made by the audition panel on whether the applicant will be made an offer for the course and how much credit (if any) they can receive for their previous study. This assessment will take into account both the performance ability of the applicant and the knowledge gained from previous study as per JMI's Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning Policy available on JMI's Academic Policies page.

Applicants with vocational education and training (VET) study

Applicants that have previously undertaken VET study will be eligible for Advanced Standing through the audition process. Applicants looking to gain advanced standing (credit) for previous study will need to bring all documentation of their prior study along in their audition.

An assessment will be made by the audition panel on whether the applicant will be made an offer for the course and how much credit (if any) they can receive for their previous study. This assessment will take into account both the performance ability of the applicant and the knowledge gained from previous study as per JMI's Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning Policy available on JMI's Academic Policies page.

Applicants with work and life experience

Applicants that have a significant amount of work and life experience in the field of jazz performance can be eligible for Advanced Standing through the audition process.  Applicants looking to gain advanced standing (credit) for work and life experience in the field of jazz performance will need to bring along their CV outlining the depth of their performance experience. An assessment will be made by the audition panel on whether the applicant will be made an offer for the course and how much credit (if any) they can receive for their experience in jazz performance. This assessment will take into account both the performance ability of the applicant and the knowledge gained from previous study as per JMI's Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning Policy available on JMI's Academic Policies page.

Additional Information

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

JMI does not offer alternative entry pathways or applications assessment methods specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. However, JMI provides support in preparing for auditioning for its programs to all socially and educationally disadvantaged applicants. Contact JMI directly to seek any support in your application.

Inherent Academic Requirements

Applicants should have at least 3 years of experience in playing their major instrument. Applicants should know major scales in all 12 keys.

Domestic students with overseas qualifications

Domestic applicants with overseas qualifications will be assessed through the audition process in the same way as an applicant with an Australian qualification.  Applicants' musical ability will be assessed through the audition process and advanced standing will be assessed in conjunction with JMI's Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning policy.

English Language Proficiency

Applicants will need to demonstrate an adequate level of English Language proficiency prior to gaining entry into this course. The following is deemed adequate and will require providing documentation (in brackets) at the point of audition:

– A Pass in Year 12 English (Senior School Certificate)

– Previous study in a VET course at Diploma level or above – AQF Level 5 or above – either complete or incomplete (Statement of Attainment)

– Previous study in a Higher Education course at Bachelor level or above – AQF Level 7 or above – either complete or incomplete (Academic Transcript)

– A score of 6.5 on an IELTS test

– An overall score of 150 or better on the STAT test

If applicants cannot demonstrate an adequate level of English Language proficiency at the time of audition, they will need to undertake a STAT test through ACER and gain an overall score of 150 or better prior to being offered a place in this course.

How to apply

Domestic students applying for undergraduate study

To apply for JMI’s Bachelor & Diploma programs, applicants must satisfy the entry requirements for the course and perform an audition. Auditions are available by appointment, both in-person and online.

To book an audition, domestic students will need to complete the online application form on JMI’s website, electing an audition date. Once received, JMI will contact applicants to confirm their audition time.

International students studying Year 12 in Australia

International students will need to follow the How To Apply instructions for international students on JMI’s website to apply for entry into JMI’s Higher Education courses.

All other international students

International students will need to follow the How To Apply instructions for international students on JMI’s website to apply for entry into JMI’s Higher Education courses.

Enrolment

Accepting an offer

Students will generally be given 30 days to respond to an offer and confirm their place in JMI’s courses. To accept an offer, students will need to complete the Enrolment Form that was sent to them along with their Letter of Offer and send back to JMI as per the instructions provided in the Letter of Offer. Offers may be withdrawn if no response has been received within the date of required reply stated on the letter of offer. Once the offer is accepted, you will be sent a letter of confirmation that confirms your enrolment in the program.

Offers

If applicants are successful in their audition, they will be sent a letter of offer for enrolment in the program. Conditional offers may be given if an applicant has not yet provided proof of English language proficiency, or if an applicant needs to further demonstrate specific performance or theory requirements based on their audition. Conditional offers will give the applicant an adequate timeframe for meeting the conditions of the offer.

Deferment

Students can defer enrolment in accordance with JMI’s Leave of Absence and Withdrawal Policy.

Advanced Standing

Advanced standing and credit transfer applications can be made in accordance with JMI’s Credit Transfer and Recognition of Prior Learning Policy.

Deferment

Students are able to defer enrolment according to JMI’s Leave of Absence and Withdrawal Policy.

Student facilities and services

JMI’s campus is located at 47 Brookes Street Bowen Hills, Queensland, Australia.

Facilities on campus includes:

• 7 teaching studios

        o 3 large ensemble studios

        o 1 lecture room

        o 3 small studios for one-on-one lessons

        o Each room equipped with PA, piano, drum kit, guitar amps, bass amps and keyboards

• A dedicated performance space that fits up to 80 students

• Library and resource space

• Student common area

The campus location is within 500m of a number of amenities including cafés, convenience stores, hotels, train stations and bus stops.

Student support

JMI offers a range of student support services, such as external counselling, academic writing, study support, organisation and time management support. JMI provides these services in accordance with its Student Support Services Policy.
