Admission criteria
All applicants
To be eligible for admission to Griffith University, you need to satisfy any admission requirements for a program of study. In Queensland the admission score for a program is expressed as an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) or selection rank. There can be additional admission requirements or selection criteria for programs including:
- English language proficiency – meeting a minimum standard of English language competency
- Minimum age – minimum age requirements for applicants at the time they would commence their studies
- Subject prerequisites – completion of compulsory subject matter
- Special selection criteria – performance in an audition, submission of a portfolio, level of attainment in a specialised test, interview or questionnaire. Any additional requirements will be indicated in the admission criteria.
Griffith University programs, admission requirements and other information relevant to admission can be found at Griffith Degree Finder. The Griffith University Admission Policy and Admission Procedure provide the principles and framework for admission.
Subject prerequisites and assumed knowledge
Griffith operates in an assumed knowledge framework. Most of our degrees assume you have studied certain subjects at school (or equivalent studies) and that you’ll be able to build on this knowledge at university. Assumed knowledge is not required for your application or admission but it will make the degree's material more accessible. Some degrees, including law, education, paramedicine and occupational therapy, have subject prerequisites as a condition of admission.
English
Most Griffith undergraduate degrees expect you to have a foundational understanding of English, expressed as assumed knowledge, in any General or Applied English subject (Units 3 and 4, C). This is achieved through completing one of the following subjects (or equivalent) in Year 12 with a minimum grade of C in Units 3 and 4:
- a General English subject including: English, English as an Additional Language, Literature, English & Literature Extension; or
- the Applied English subject, Essential English.
The Bachelor of Education and all Laws (Honours) degrees still have a General English prerequisite. The admission criteria for these programs will state ‘English, English as an Additional Language, Literature or English & Literature Extension (Units 3 and 4, C)’.
Mathematics
A range of Griffith programs have mathematics as Assumed Knowledge. This is indicated in the admission criteria. These programs include Engineering (Honours) and Software Engineering (Honours). Some degrees still require a General Mathematics as either a prerequisite or as a ‘one of’ a combination. These programs are the Bachelor of Education which requires a ‘General Mathematics or Mathematical Methods (Units 3 and 4, C)’, or the Bachelor of Paramedicine which requires ‘One of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology, General Mathematics or Mathematical Methods (Units 3 and 4, C)’.
To find out more, including equivalent interstate subjects or other studies, visit Prerequisites and Assumed Knowledge.
Griffith Guaranteed Admission Schemes
Our guaranteed admission schemes include our Year 12 Early Offer Guarantee, ATAR/Rank Guarantee, Griffith University Head Start Guarantee and VET Guarantee (for those who have completed an AQF Certificate III or above). Depending on your study choices, you may be eligible for guaranteed admission into one of a range of undergraduate degrees. To find out more, visit Guaranteed Admission Scheme.
Griffith Year 12 Early Offer
The Year 12 Early Offer Guarantee offers eligible current Queensland and norther New South Wale school leavers guaranteed admission to 100+ degrees based on their ATAR/IB/HSC studies, or on successful completion of a Griffith Head Start course or VET qualification (AQF Certificate III or IV or Diploma). To find out more, visit Year 12 Early Offer Guarantee.
Griffith Undergraduate Diplomas
Griffith undergraduate diplomas give you a supported start to your university studies, helping you to transition to your chosen bachelor degree. Offered as a packaged offer, once you successfully complete your diploma, you’ll be guaranteed admission into second year of the related bachelor. You’ll undertake your first year of study alongside your peers and finish your studies in the same amount of time, at no extra cost. Make sure to include in your preferences as a back-up or preferred plan! For further information visit Undergraduate Diplomas.
Applicants with higher education study
If you have completed a bachelor degree or higher, you will be assigned a selection rank based on the level and duration of the study and the Grade Point Average (GPA) you have achieved.
Successfully completing two or more bachelor-level courses (subjects) in a degree program will also provide you with a selection rank. Successful completion of two or more courses will also meet the Griffith University English subject prerequisite required for the Bachelor of Education and all Laws (Honours) degrees. It doesn’t matter which two courses have been completed. For more information visit Upgrading via University Studies.
If you have a number of different qualifications for which selection ranks can be assigned, normally the highest rank will be used for admission.
Credit and Recognition of Prior Learning
Griffith awards credit if you can demonstrate that you have already achieved the learning required for components of a program of study. Griffith may grant credit for:
- Formal study that takes place through a structured program of learning and leads to the full or partial achievement of an officially accredited qualification. Examples include study undertaken with other Australian higher education providers, study undertaken at a Vocational Education and Training (VET) provider including TAFE and private colleges, study at overseas institutions, or credentialed programs provided by recognised professional bodies, employers and other authorities.
- Non-formal learning that takes place through a structured program of learning but does not lead to an officially accredited qualification. Examples include learning and training activities undertaken in the workplace, voluntary sector or in community-based settings.
- Informal learning which is gained through work, social, family, hobby or leisure activities and experience. Informal learning is not organised or externally structured in terms of objectives, time or learning support.
- Pathways with credit that are agreed and approved with other institutions via an articulation agreement. Examples include Griffith College and TAFE. You can apply for credit transfer once you have been admitted and this may reduce the time required to complete the program of study. Visit credit transfer for more information.
Applicants with completed bridging or enabling course
Griffith University offers a range of bridging and enabling courses and accepts a number of courses completed at one of the registered higher education providers across Australia for admission. Griffith offers a Maths bridging course to meet the prerequisite for the Diploma of Education and the Bachelor of Education. The new EmpowerED University Preparation program provides applicants with the knowledge, skills and confidence to enter an undergraduate degree and guaranteed admission to a range of degrees post completion and admission will be facilitated directly upon completion.
Visit Griffith Bridging and Enabling for more information.
Applicants with vocational education and training (VET) study
VET Pathways to Griffith
If you have completed an AQF certificate III, IV, diploma or advanced diploma, you are eligible for guaranteed admission entry to a range of Griffith programs. You will still need to meet all subject prerequisites and any other admission requirements as outlined in the Griffith Degree Finder or visit Guaranteed Admission Scheme.
For admission to other programs not listed in the VET Guarantee, your completed AQF certificates III and IV, diplomas and advanced diplomas will be assessed based our admission schedules.
TAFE Admission Pathway
If you have a completed Diploma, Advanced Diploma post school or Certificate IV in Adult Tertiary Preparation (CATP) through TAFE, can also apply for direct admission to Griffith for a range of programs and receive credit transfer, which may reduce the time it will take to complete your degree. Use our Credit Precedent Database to find out how a qualification from TAFE could translate to credit transfer for your Griffith studies. For details on how these qualifications are assessed visit VET Pathways to Griffith.
Griffith College Pathways
Griffith College offers a range of diploma programs to prepare students for a smooth transition into a full program of study at Griffith University. If you complete a Griffith College packaged diploma, you may receive a direct offer or may apply directly to the University to study the related Griffith University bachelor program.
If you have several selection ranks (e.g. based on Year 12 results, VET study, higher education study, employment), you will generally be considered on the highest rank. You are also required to meet relevant subject prerequisites for the course you are applying for. These can be satisfied by successfully completing Senior secondary subjects (or equivalent). Subject prerequisites generally cannot be met through certificate-level study. You must also satisfy any additional admission requirements.
Applicants with work and life experience
Year 12 results (ATAR/selection rank) do not expire once you have left school. Whether this result is considered for an offer to a program will depend on whether you have additional qualifications (including other recognised qualifications completed while at school or post school).
This includes formal qualifications such as Senior External Examination results, higher education study (e.g. bachelor degree level and higher), VET study such as competency-based and graded AQF certificates III and IV (completed), diplomas and sub-degree level study and bridging and preparation courses. Other post-secondary professional and paraprofessional qualifications (including some creative arts, language and civil aviation qualifications, memberships of professional associations for which qualifying exams are undertaken and police, emergency defence force service will be also considered.
Griffith University will also consider you for admission if you have:
- Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) and employment experience; applicants must be 18 or older to use STAT. Some program exemptions apply; refer to STAT and employment experience.
- bridging or enabling courses completed at one of the registered higher education providers across Australia.
- successful completion of the Certificate IV in Adult Tertiary Preparation from Queensland TAFE. Students may undertake specific modules to meet subject prerequisite requirements. A minimum rank is available for two or more successfully completed modules.
- Music, Dance and Performing Arts qualifications such as Australian Music Examination Board (AMEB) qualifications and Royal Academy of Dance (RAD).
Comprehensive information can be found on admissions pathways.
Griffith welcomes applications from Veterans and military service personnel through QTAC, UAC or via the Veterans Direct Application Pathway for most Griffith undergraduate degrees on the basis of your service. If you have completed the armed services general training and at least twelve months' service, you will be awarded a selection rank making you eligible for a range of Griffith degrees. Griffith recognises the training, experience and qualifications undertaken by ADF personnel and you may be eligible for credit or recognition of prior learning. Griffith University is developing opportunities to reach your full potential through education with a newly formed Veterans Student Success Program. For more information visit Veterans.
Bridging and enabling course entry
If you lack the formal qualifications, entry rank or subject prerequisites for your preferred degree, completing a bridging course or enabling program first could be the answer.
EmpowerED University Preparation Program
A free, comprehensive preparatory program, EmpowerED provides a pathway for applicants who don’t meet the formal admission requirements to enter an undergraduate degree at Griffith.
Once you've successfully completed the program, you'll be offered guaranteed admission into a wide range of undergraduate degrees at Griffith. Visit EmpowerED for more information.
Enabling programs offered at other institutions may provide a selection rank for admission to Griffith programs e.g. Certificate IV in Adult Tertiary Preparation (CATP). Applicants with a completed CATP from TAFE Queensland may also apply for direct admission. Contact Griffith for further information.
Bridging Courses
Bridging courses are short, intensive or self-paced courses designed for either Year 12 or mature applicants who want to improve their subject knowledge. Bridging courses can be undertaken to meet subject prerequisites or to meet assumed knowledge competency. This type of study is useful for students with limited or no prior study in a specific subject area, those who have had a significant break from prior studies or those requiring a subject refresher.
Bridging maths for aspiring educators is for applicants to Griffith University initial teacher education diploma and degrees. This course is offered part-time over six weeks in on-campus and online modes and does not incur a fee for applicants. Visit Maths bridging for aspiring educators.
Bridging courses offered at Griffith University do not provide a selection rank for admission and are designed to meet prerequisite requirements only. Visit Griffith Bridging and Enabling for more information.
Applicants with recent secondary education (within the past two years)
Current Year 12 Applicants
If you are a current Year 12 student applying to Griffith, you will be considered for admission on the basis of merit (expressed as an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) and whether you meet the admission criteria (such as subject prerequisites).
If you are a current Queensland or interstate Year 12 student who does not qualify for an ATAR, you may be considered on the basis of a completed vocational education and training (VET) qualification such as Certificate III or above, as Griffith University accepts standalone VET completed at school for Year 12s to meet rank. You must also meet any subject prerequisites for admission and any other selection criteria. A completed AQF diploma will meet English subject prerequisites. To find out more, visit VET Pathways to Griffith.
If you are a current International Baccalaureate (IB) student applying to Griffith, you are assigned a selection rank based on your completed IB Diploma. This selection rank is expressed on the same scale as the ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank).
Griffith University recognises that some IB students will experience circumstances that prevents them from being awarded the Diploma and offers an IB Safety Net. This means that if for some reason you do not complete your IB Diploma you will be able to apply to QTAC for a place at Griffith and be assessed based on the study that you have completed. You don't need to apply separately for the Safety Net, as you will automatically be considered when you apply to QTAC. Any eligible adjustments will also be applied to your rank. For more information, visit International Baccalaureate.
Results from home schooling, Accelerated Christian Education (ACE) and other non-standard Year 12 programs (with SAT tests) may also be assigned a selection rank and considered for an offer based on this selection rank (or other recognised qualifications undertaken while at school). Some exceptions may apply to courses with additional admission requirements. Contact Griffith University for more information.
Applicants with Overseas Year 12 study
Griffith University will consider equivalent overseas Year 12 qualifications for admission purposes. Contact Griffith for more information. If you have secondary or tertiary qualifications from countries where English is not the standard language of instruction, you must provide evidence of English language proficiency.
If you have completed other recognised qualifications while still at school, these may also be assigned a selection rank and considered for admission to Griffith. Examples include Performing Arts, Dance and Music qualifications such as the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) and Australian Music Examination Board (AMEB) qualifications.
If you have a number of different qualifications for which selection ranks can be assigned, normally the highest will be used for admission. You are also required to meet any applicable subject prerequisites for the program you are applying for. This will be satisfied by successful completion of Senior secondary subjects (or equivalent). Any additional admission requirements must also be satisfied.
ATAR/Selection Rank Adjustments
Current Year 12 Applicants
Griffith University has developed a number of admission schemes which are designed to meet the needs of local communities, provide access to university for people who have experienced disadvantage or to encourage people under-represented at university from particular populations, including Australia’s First Peoples.
These schemes provide a maximum adjustment of eight (8.00) ranks and include:
Year 12 Subject Adjustment: recognises that some subjects undertaken by current high school students require a high level of skill and knowledge as preparation for university study. If you complete selected Year 12 subjects you may be eligible for a maximum adjustment of six (6.00) ranks when applying for study at Griffith in the year following the successful completion of Year 12. Program exclusions apply.
Griffith University Head Start: if you are a Queensland or northern NSW Year 11 or 12 student completing an ATAR, IB or VET pathway, or other eligible criteria, you may apply to complete a maximum of two undergraduate subjects while still studying at high school. Only one subject may be taken per semester. On successful completion, you will be eligible for two (2.00) adjustments towards your selection rank for each university course to a maximum of four (4.00) adjustment ranks. These adjustments form part of the Year 12 Subject Adjustment. For complete details, visit Head Start.
Location Adjustments: If you are new to tertiary study, you may be eligible for Location Adjustments if you are living in an area deemed to be within the catchment for the campus. For more information please visit Adjustment factors website and refer to the tabs for Brisbane Community Engagement or Gold Coast and Logan Campus Priority Access. You may be eligible for an adjustment of two (2.00) ranks towards your selection rank when applying for eligible programs offered. Program exclusions apply.
Educational Access Scheme (EAS): if you have experienced difficulties that have negatively impacted your studies, you may be eligible for adjustments to your selection rank that are used to recognise the impact of financial, health-related or social disadvantage. The allocation of adjustments does not guarantee entry to Griffith or to your preferred program, you still have to meet the published selection rank for the program and any particular admission requirements. Program exclusions apply. Applications are submitted via QTAC or UAC and full details of the EAS are available on the QTAC website and UAC website.
Elite Athlete Support: if you’re an elite athlete, you could be eligible to receive an adjustment to your selection rank (or ATAR). You can apply for adjustment factors as part of your QTAC application, with up to 6.00 selection ranks able to apply to your ATAR/selection rank. Program exclusions apply. Applications are submitted via QTAC or UAC and full details of the EAS are available on the QTAC website and UAC website.
Incremental Adjustments for the Bachelor of Medical Science: if you are eligible for EAS, rural, or location adjustments you could receive incremental adjustments to your selection rank (or ATAR) if applying for medical science. The maximum incremental adjustment for a Bachelor of Medical Science application is 0.20 points. Please note that these incremental adjustments apply to your selection ranking (i.e. ATAR), not to your UCAT ANZ Total Score if you have sat this test.
For further information on all of our available schemes, visit Griffith Adjustment Factors.
Non-Year 12 Applicants
Griffith University has developed a number of admission schemes which are designed to meet the needs of local communities, provide access to university for people who have experienced disadvantage or to encourage people under-represented at university from particular populations, including Australia’s First Peoples.
These schemes provide a maximum adjustment of eight (8.00) selection ranks and include:
Location Adjustments: if you are new to tertiary study, you may be eligible for Location Adjustments if you are living in an area deemed to be within the catchment for the campus or an area that qualifies as rural or remote. For more information please visit Adjustment factors website and refer to the tabs for Brisbane Community Engagement, Gold Coast and Logan Campus Priority Access or Rural and Remote Access.
The allocation of adjustments does not guarantee admission to Griffith or to your preferred program, you still have to meet the published selection rank for the program and any particular admission requirements. Program exclusions apply. Applications are submitted via QTAC or UAC and full details are available on the QTAC website and UAC website.
Applications are submitted via QTAC or UAC and full details are available on the QTAC website and UAC website.
