You’ll also have access to free academic skills programs and career advice, as well as an online and on-campus library.
We have dedicated support services for First Nations students and students with a disability and/or a health condition.
Pathways to study
We believe it’s the experiences you bring to university that make you a great student. For those without an ATAR, we offer entry qualification pathways into university.
Our Tertiary Enabling Program can be studied online or on campus, full-time or part-time. In just 16 weeks you’ll meet the entry requirements to most undergraduate degrees at CDU.

Admission criteria
All applicants
Special consideration
Special consideration may be given to applicants who have special circumstances, including a long-term medical condition, that may have disadvantaged them in their studies and which they wish to be taken into account in the assessment of their application.
Applicants who seek special consideration as part of the application process will be able to download a confidential questionnaire and information on the supporting documentation that will be required.
Current year 12 students cannot seek special consideration through the SATAC process. In South Australia and the Northern Territory, year 12 students who have special circumstances should seek consideration from the SACE Board. Information is available from the SACE Board website.
Year 12 students studying elsewhere in Australia (not South Australia or the Northern Territory) who have special circumstances should seek consideration from the board of studies in their state/territory or directly from their school.
Entry pathways
You will meet the minimum admission requirements for most courses if you have completed one of the following:
- Successful completion of the Northern Territory Certificate of Education and Training (or equivalent) and the awarding of an Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) of at least 60 after any applicable ATAR adjustments have been applied.
- Successful completion of a national qualification at Certificate IV level or higher.
- Successful completion of at least 0.5 year of full-time study (or equivalent) of a higher education degree/diploma.
- Overseas secondary or tertiary qualifications considered equivalent to the above Australian qualifications.
- Attainment of a STAT Multiple Choice score of 135 (or a score of 145 if prior to May 2010).
- Successful completion of the Tertiary Enabling Program, the ACIKE Preparation for Tertiary Success courses, or other recognised tertiary preparation course.
- Submission of an acceptable personal competencies statement and/or employment experience.
Some courses are more competitive than others. While the minimum ATAR for admission is 60, these courses may cut off at a higher score. Check the course detail page of your chosen course to find the ATAR requirements. If the course you have chosen has additional entry requirements, you will be contacted by our Admissions team.
For more information read about pathways to study.
English requirements
All HE applicants and VET international applicants are required to demonstrate the minimum English language proficiency requirements for their chosen course of study. These entry requirements will generally be met by undertaking previous education in an English speaking country or obtaining a minimum International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score.
Age requirements
CDU Has no minimum age requirements. However there are age limits when applying for special entry and work experience.
Applicants with HE study
Credit
Credit transfer is available for students who have undertaken higher education awards at Charles Darwin University or other universities, or who have successfully completed certain VET or TAFE courses.
Applicants with VET Study
Recognition of VET study
Successful completion of a national qualification at Certificate IV level or higher.
NOTE: There are some courses at Charles Darwin University that do not admit applicants solely on the basis of a VET qualification. Please refer to the SATAC course entry for more information.
Applicants with Work and Life experience
Minimum ATAR requirements
CDU does not have a restriction on the age of your ATAR or equivalent. The minimum entry for most courses is an Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) of at least 60 after any applicable adjustment factors have been applied.
Applicants with no formal qualification
Prospective students who do not have the necessary qualifications, or whose qualifications are not competitive enough, may consider sitting an admissions test, or providing details of their work and life experience, to gain entry to their chosen course.
If you are considering this pathway you will normally be required to sit the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT), however some courses will consider life experience in the form of a personal competencies statement and/or work experience, or a combination of all three.
Where STAT is required this applies only to applicants who are applying via this pathway. If you are eligible and competitive enough to apply with another qualification you do not need to sit the STAT. Visit the SATAC webpage for more details on Admission Pathways.
Applicants with a recent secondary education (Current, 2020 and 2021)
Minimum ATAR requirements
Successful completion of the Northern Territory Certificate of Education and Training (or equivalent) and the awarding of an Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) of at least 60 after any applicable ATAR adjustments have been applied.
