The Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) is Australia’s leading screen and broadcast school. Established to fuel and empower Australian creativity and storytelling, AFTRS is committed to finding storytellers from all over Australia to tell the diverse stories of this country. Established in 1973 by the Australian Government, AFTRS provides unrivalled opportunities for its students to network and form lifelong professional relationships while learning at a state-of-the-art film school. AFTRS has a track record of award success. The School’s alumni and staff have both won and been nominated for a slate of Academy, Golden Globe, Emmy, BAFTA and AACTA awards and its graduates are working at the highest levels in the screen and broadcast industries.

The School delivers dynamic screen education offerings, including the Bachelor of Arts Screen: Production, Master of Arts Screen, Graduate Diploma in Radio, industry certificates and short courses, all of which are focused on creating industry-ready graduates.

The AFTRS Bachelor of Arts Screen: Production is a three-year, full-time course designed for people with a passion for storytelling and a commitment to a career in the screen industries. AFTRS is eager to work with students from a diverse range of backgrounds who are imaginative, collaborative and keen to develop their voice as Australian storytellers.

Policies and Services

Admission criteria

Entry is by merit selection based on the completion of tasks and submitted work. Specific details on these tasks and the required examples of your creative work differ for each course level and are available on the AFTRS website.

How to apply

Enrolment

You will receive information about acceptance and enrolment procedures with your letter of offer.

Fees and charges

Tuition fees are payable per semester. Fees for each year are published on the AFTRS website. AFTRS reserves the right to change the fees for any course and to make alterations to the course of study, which may increase the fees over the duration of the course.

AFTRS is an approved higher education provider and is registered with Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency, which means eligible AFTRS students have the opportunity to apply for the Australian Government’s FEE-HELP loan scheme – see ‘Financial assistance’ below.

Financial assistance

Students can apply for FEE-HELP, which is available to Australian citizens and repaid through the taxation system once your income is above the threshold.

Equity and Indigenous Scholarships are available, and you apply directly to AFTRS. 

Student and campus services

AFTRS’ Student Centre can assist students with access to counselling and student welfare services. The AFTRS Library is home to the biggest screen and broadcast collection in Australia. The school also features a full-size cinema with 5.1 sound, a state-of-the-art mix theatre, professional television studio and film studios, state-of-the-art sound recording studios including Foley, 25 edit suites, screen music composition suites, offline and online editing suites, multiple computer labs, on-air digital radio studios, a dedicated technical equipment store, a construction workshop, a props store, dedicated location trucks and more.
